learning big things from small gestures
There are a lot of reasons people practice yoga. It is somewhat simplistic to say so, but it’s also true. Some people practice to push their physical limits. Others come to find a reprieve from the pressures of daily life. And others come to find an even breath or a clear mind. I love all of those things about yoga, but the more I practice, the more I realize that I most enjoy some of the less glamorous little kernels of the practice: the silent moments before class starts, a slow, controlled entry into a posture, and the feeling of my breath moving in and out of my nose. Sometimes I am simply happy to not speak for a whole hour or more.
Finding peace amidst the chaos
When I first started my work with special-needs children an average day for me was typically divided into two extremes. The first half of the day I work with extremely active pre-school children whose diagnoses place them within the autism spectrum. Their autism often makes it difficult for them to communicate their needs and self-regulate; hence the activeness. The kids are full of love and they teach me a valuable lesson about life on a daily basis but there are many times when any sense of calmness shoots out the window and chaos quickly seeps in through the doorway. Whether we’re bouncing on therapeutic medicinal balls, exploring musical instruments, doing sensory activities like sand table play or painting, there is never a dull moment in the classroom.
Out of the frying pan, into the fire
So, it’s hot outside.
People are complaining, the grass in your yard is brown and the top ten layers of your skin just melted to your steering wheel while you were driving to your hot yoga class.
Wait—what?
Why in the world would someone leave her 100-degree living room, get into her 120-degree car and drive to a 105-degree yoga room?
Creating a Sanctuary in the Yoga Room
The yoga room is a sanctuary. Leave your shoes, worries, and attachments outside.
We all love yoga because it’s so much more than a workout. In the yoga room, we find inner strength and focus. We find patience and serenity. And most importantly, we find our Selves. In this way, a yoga class is very different from a gym or a fitness class. And for this reason, we invite you to think of the yoga room as a sacred space – a sanctuary – where we heal our bodies, yes, but also where we enter into a state of moving meditation, share energy with our fellow yogis, and nurture our spirits.
ashtanga yoga? hatha yoga? it’s all sanskrit (and yoga) to us!
“What does asana mean?” “Will my body ever bend that way?!” “What if I can’t move tomorrow?” These are all questions we hear from first-time students. Another frequent question: “What kind of yoga do you offer at evolation?”
Clear Water Only in the Yoga Room
Lately, we’ve been noticing a lot of interesting and tasty-looking beverages coming in to the yoga room . . . coconut water, juice, Power Aid, and other electrolyte beverages. We love these kinds of replenishing drinks, but they are best for AFTER class, not DURING class. Why? We’re glad you asked!
#yogastory: Keeping the Dream Alive
Amazing!! Six weeks have already gone by since I completed evolation’s hot yoga teacher training and left the the US. Don’t they say “time flies when your having fun?” Australia’s Sunshine Coast is beautiful country, with beautiful people, amazing light, incredible energy, and of course plenty of sunshine.
Yoga Teacher Training
I’ll bet after you read “beside the lazy river” you thought about a beautiful river winding through a deep green forest, deer bending to drink from the cool water, fish rising slowly to the surface. Mmm, that would be a lovely place to feel inspired to Triangle. But despite living in a state known for its gorgeous rivers, and despite a penchant for public yoga, that was not at all the case.
Yoga Training: Home Sweet Home #yogastory
It’s been nearly a week now since I went to my last day of evolation’s August hot yoga teacher training in Missoula, Montana. (Since we are doing an extended training, we will continue in the fall.)
#yogastory: Following a Dream
After many years of going round and round in circles, not really knowing who I really was, what I wanted to do with my life and what was my purpose on Mother Earth….I discovered YOGA….not a day would go by without practicing, it became part of me, a deep part of me, unexplainable and all I knew was that I had to do something with this passion. So, naturally the next step was to spread the Yoga Love…How??? Become a Yoga Teacher!
