answering who am I during my yoga teacher training in bali

On the first day of my yoga teacher training in bali, we answered the question “who am I?” This wasn’t a question I was expecting…and I certainly didn’t know the answer. So in my confusion, I wrote this:

“I am Meggy…but beyond being Meggy I don’t really know. I suppose I could write a bunch of words that describe me but none of them would actually say anything about me. So I guess I don’t know. But maybe in 4 weeks I’ll know better.”

I didn’t come to my yoga teacher training in bali expecting to do anything beyond a whole lot of yoga. In fact, one of the last things I was expecting to plunge headfirst into a world of self-discovery. But here I am. And what I’ve learned here in Bali is so far beyond breaking down the postures and holding warrior 2 for 12 minutes and doing 197 chaturangas a day during Sun Salutation week. Because yoga is infinitely more than the postures we practice. Because yoga is life.

There are no words that come close to adequately describing this beautiful journey which began just a few weeks ago…and is really only just beginning. I think if I had to describe this succinctly, I would say that was I feel is profound, eternal, infinite gratitude for each and every person, each and every circumstance, each and every choice that brought me to this place and set me on this path.

Today when I answered the question “who am I?” I answered:

“I am a being made of stardust, temporarily Earth-bound in this life. I am the forest and the sea. I am the sunrise and the sunset. I am part of everything that is and ever was, and everything that will ever be. I am ‘l’amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle’ (the love that moves the sun and the other stars). And so are you.”

To steal one of my favorite phrases from Mark:
Love that fits like a glove,
Meggy
