benefits of yoga that aren’t widely known

What are the biggest benefits of yoga that aren’t widely known?

Jelena Lepesic, Senior Teacher at TheHotTT

The practice of yoga serves me as a direct communication tool with the Great Spirit. In the stillness between throughs and words is when Great Spirit speaks to me. Yoga asana practice to me is an unspoken prayer, where movements serve as words, and the mind doesn’t define meaning. With every inhale I take in new energy and possibilities. With every exhale I release the old.

The benefits of yoga are practically endless. Self confidence. Travel. Friendships. Alone time. Alertness. Energy. Stronger mental strength. The list goes on and on. Yoga helps overcome many challenges like weight loss and treating a wide assortment of ailments, that we face in everyday life so those are the benefits that people hear most about. On top of the obvious perks, it gives you a world wide community. Meeting friends is as easy as taking a hot yoga class in another city. As a teacher, teaching and living in another city is as easy as saying, “yes I’m a certified teacher and would like to work here.” Hot yoga is also a challenge in class that shows you that you have the mental strength to push past any obstacles, opening doors and boosting self confidence. The class itself is a tough workout, but despite that you have more energy directly after the class and it sticks with you for the rest of the day. People come to yoga their first time for many different reasons, but when they stick with the process they easily see it changes and improves every aspect of their life. Just have to get there the first time 😉

The capacity to keep going through difficulty. I think the patience one has to develop to keep a 20+ years yoga practice up, the commitment and the self transcendence needed, is the main benefit that people don’t realise until several years have gone by. One day you realise you have more mental stamina than people half your age, more ability to withstand hardship, more energy to project and use and transform with. The body is going to die, i don’t see the point spending a lifetime in yoga trying to perfect it, so one may as well do the inner work, the work that we hope will have an effect and rewards when we are too old to go to class, or even after we die!

Leticia Leyva, Support Teacher at TheHotTT

The greatest of the benefits of yoga is that yoga teaches you how to truly love and respect yourself and all your perfect imperfections. “You are exactly where you need to be, exactly when you need to be there.” You are freed from the constant pressure of trying to live up to impossible standards of being the best at everything you do or see and allow yourself to really just be present and enjoy where you are right now. You are granted a certain inner peace that is unique to each individual and goes much deeper than words can suffice to explain but you’ll know or already do know exactly what I mean once you experience it.

Katie Lowsley-Williams, Support Teacher at TheHotTT

For me yoga gives me space from the outside noise and constant mind chatter. It’s a time when I really get mind to body connection and can see through my thoughts clearly. Among all the amazing physical benefits of yoga it’s the mental that I find most difficult and also the most rewarding.

This is not necessarily unknown but embracing a yoga practice changes your entire life. Its the fastest way to become healthy and happy in all aspects!

Susan Wyler, Senior Teacher at TheHotTT

Yoga has changed my sense of time, deepened my ability to be watchful and patient. As a novelist, teacher, and mother, this has been invaluable. I’m able to allow story to unfold — in fiction as in life – without exerting my will unnecessarily. I can sit for long periods of time without feeling restless, without physical aches and pains. Practicing beginner’s mind for decades, I am receptive to surprise, comfortable with making adaptations. These are the gifts of yoga, for me.
