Start Yoga Teacher Training in January: A New Year Plan

Every January, a lot of people make the same promise: this is the year I finally become a yoga teacher. Most of them are still saying it the following January.

The difference between the people who do it and the people who keep planning to is rarely talent or flexibility. It is a date in the calendar and a plan to get there. This guide gives you both: why January is a strong month to start, three realistic ways to begin teacher training in early 2027, and a week-by-week countdown from now to your first day.

Why January is a good month to start

Your calendar is still empty. In January, most people haven't yet committed their leave days, weekends or budget for the year. Booking training first means everything else fits around it, not the other way round.

Motivation is at its peak. The New Year push is real. A training date turns that energy into something with a start and an end, before February's routine sets in.

You finish in time for the year ahead. Start in January and you can be certified by February, with the rest of the year to find classes, cover for other teachers and build a following.

The practice fits the season. For anyone in a northern winter, a few weeks in a warm room, or on a tropical coast, is a powerful reset after the holidays.

It's a clean line in the sand. "I became a yoga teacher in 2027" is a much clearer goal than "someday".

Three ways to start teacher training in January 2027

1. Two weeks in Bali (January 23 – February 6, 2027)

Evolation's January immersion is a 200-hour hot or flow yoga teacher training in Bali, with eight places. You choose the 26+2 hot sequence or vinyasa flow, and graduate eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an RYT 200 (Bali training).

  • Where: Pondok Pitaya, a beachfront hotel with its own yoga shala at Balian Beach, on Bali's quiet southwest coast

  • Group size: Small, around 10 trainees, so you get individual attention

  • A typical day: Group study from 8am, then class, practice modules and an afternoon teaching clinic, with your own yoga practice in the evening

  • Led by: Evolation co-founders Mark Drost and Zefea Samson, with the Evolation faculty

  • Tuition: EUR 3,200, or EUR 2,700 with the early bird price. Optional housing and meals at the hotel start at EUR 1,550 for a shared room.

It's the most immersive option: two weeks with nothing to do but learn, practice and teach.

2. Online, starting any day

If you can't travel in January, you can start the 200-hour training online on January 1, or any day you choose. You study at your own pace with the video library and one-to-one live sessions with faculty, and it carries the same Yoga Alliance accreditation (online training).

This suits anyone who wants to begin now and fit study around work.

3. Book in January, train in spring

If January itself is too soon, use the month to commit to a later date. The next European immersion is in Tavira, Portugal, from March 6 to 20, 2027 (training calendar). Booking in January gives you eight weeks to prepare and something fixed to work toward.

What Bali is like in late January

We'd rather you arrive prepared than surprised. January is the middle of Bali's wet season. On the coast, it rains on about 18 days of the month, usually as short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain, and the air averages around 28°C (82°F) with high humidity (Bali Untold).

For a teacher training, that matters less than it would for a beach holiday. Most of your day is spent in the shala, so a passing storm rarely changes the schedule. And there are upsides:

  • Quieter and cheaper. After the first week of January, crowds thin out and flights and hotels return to lower, off-season prices (Bali Untold).

  • Green everything. The rice fields, jungle and waterfalls are at their fullest in the rainy months.

  • Warm in every sense. If you're coming from a northern winter, you'll be acclimatized to heat before you set foot in a hot class.

  • A meaningful time to arrive. Galungan and Kuningan, Bali's most important Hindu holiday period, runs from January 13 to 23, 2027. The streets are lined with tall bamboo decorations called penjor, and the final day falls on the training's first day (Bali Untold).

What to pack: a light rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, insect repellent, and more practice clothes than you think you need, as things dry slowly in the humidity.

Your countdown: from now to day one

November: decide and commit

  1. Pick your format. Immersion, online or a later in-person date. Be honest about your time off, budget and how you learn best.

  2. Talk to the school. Ask your questions before you pay: who teaches, what a day looks like, what's included.

  3. Apply and reserve your place. Small trainings fill up, and the Bali group has only eight places. For Bali, a refundable EUR 120 pre-deposit holds your spot after you apply.

  4. Book time off. Request leave now, before colleagues claim the same weeks.

December: build the habit

  1. Practice four to five times a week. You don't need advanced poses, but you do need stamina. If you're training in hot yoga, take as many hot classes as you can.

  2. Start the reading. Ask for the reading list or begin your online modules early, so the theory isn't new on day one.

  3. Book flights and sort documents. Check the entry rules for your passport, your travel insurance, and transfers. Evolation can connect Bali trainees with a trusted local driver.

  4. Protect the holidays. Enjoy them, but keep practicing. Two weeks off the mat in late December is the most common reason trainees arrive stiff and tired.

January: arrive ready

  1. Shift your routine. In the last two weeks, move your sleep and practice times toward the training schedule, which starts at 8am.

  2. Hydrate properly. Practice in the heat drains water and salt, so build good habits now rather than in week one. Our guide to hot yoga, water and salt explains why more water alone isn't the answer.

  3. Pack light, pack for rain. Practice clothes, a notebook, a refillable bottle and a rain jacket.

  4. Set your intention. Write down why you're doing this. You'll want to read it again in week two, when it gets hard.

How to keep this resolution

Most New Year goals fade by February because they stay vague. Teacher training is different when you set it up right.

  • Put money down. A deposit turns an intention into a commitment, and it is much harder to quietly drop.

  • Tell people. Tell your family, your studio and your friends. Saying it out loud makes it real.

  • Choose a date, not a season. "January 23" gets done. "Sometime next year" doesn't.

  • Expect the middle to be hard. Around the middle of any intensive training, energy dips and doubt creeps in. That is normal, and it passes.

  • Know you can come back. Evolation graduates can repeat the same training free, for life, so your first training is not your only chance to learn the material.

Frequently asked questions

Is January a good time for yoga teacher training in Bali?

Yes, if you're comfortable with tropical rain. It's the wet season, so expect frequent short showers and high humidity, but prices and crowds are lower after the first week, and most training hours are spent indoors in the shala.

Can I start yoga teacher training online in January?

Yes. Online training can start any day, including January 1, and you work through it at your own pace with live one-to-one sessions.

How fit do I need to be for a two-week immersion?

You need a steady practice, not advanced poses. If you can comfortably take a full class four or five times a week, you're ready.

Do I need previous teaching experience?

No. The 200-hour training is the starting point for new teachers.

Can I choose between hot and flow yoga in Bali?

Yes. The January Bali training offers either the 26+2 hot sequence or vinyasa flow.

Is accommodation included?

Tuition covers the training and materials. Housing and meals at the hotel are optional and booked separately, starting at EUR 1,550 for a shared room.

Will my certificate be recognized?

Yes. Evolation is a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance, so graduates can register as an RYT 200 and teach internationally.

Make 2027 the year you teach

The best time to decide is before the year starts. Pick your date, reserve your place, and let January do the rest.
