The Beginner's Mind

Do you know someone who is afraid to try yoga? Every day, many people walk through the door for the very first time, and many of them share the same fear — that they will be the only one who is “new.”

At evolation, we ALL strive to keep a “beginner’s mind,” no matter how long we have been practicing! Whether it’s your first class or your 500th, the best way to experience yoga is with a blank slate — no expectations, no judgments, and a willingness to surrender. Sometimes, the longer we have been practicing, the HARDER this becomes. The mind starts to anticipate and jump ahead. Staying present in the moment is the REAL practice — the yoga postures are just the tools we use! Fortunately, staying present in the moment is something that you can practice starting with your very first class — indeed, your very first breath. No experience, flexibility, or particular skill is required.

Do you remember your first class? Do you remember what made you take the leap and walk through the door the first time? Is there someone in your life who might benefit from hearing your story?

Please share your thoughts here! And bring that hesitant friend with you next time you come to class. It’s a great time of year to get started with many other people who are in exactly the same boat!

Zefea Samson had her first experience with yoga at the age of 4 when her parents practiced with renowned teacher Angela Farmer in the Iyengar tradition. She forgot about yoga during her teens and twenties and trained for boxing and the combat system Krav Maga. Zefea rediscovered the benefits of yoga when she started practicing Bikram Yoga in her home town Amsterdam. From 2006-2008 she represented the Netherlands as the Dutch gold medalist in the International Yoga Championships, finishing in the world's top 10. Zefea experienced new depths of yoga through practicing while pregnant (up till the day of giving birth).
